BRIGHT AFTERNOON PARTY

There was a happy, and exceedingly busy atmosphere at tho Wellington Bowling Club's greens yesterday afternoon, when "President'B Day" was kept, and seventy lady visitors, as well as a great many local ladies were most pleasantly entertained. - .-•■', The bowlers were, of course, very busy with, interesting ; and- exciting games, and the intent faces of both men and women round tho groens were sure signs of. the deep interest takon, in the fine old pastime. Tho heat was,' great, and the gardens showed signs of summer dryness, though tho entrance was bright with .antirrhinums and fragment .with many-tinted stocks. All the .pavilion was at the disposal of the guests, the balconies were well, occupied with onlookers and tea tables, and the large .room upstairs was arranged for tea, with many tempting eatables added. : The flowers were from the gardens of Hutt bowlers, and they might .well have heen-proud. of the. beautiful, blooms. The central table was arranged entire^ lytvith mauve sweet peas, in all .the alluring shades which are so popular now, with maidenhair fern advantageously added, . while the two side tables were decorated with pink sweet peas; and gypsbphilla, 'all being, placed in silver trophy bowls- 'The general effect was delightful. Dainty lacy mats and serviettes in the same tones, .were an effective addition ■■ to the colour scheme. .'•■ '; . .'. Mrs. Mayer (wife of tho president), who received the guests,'was in a smart nut-brown crepo de chine.frock with revers ana trimming of diagonal brown, and beige silk; her brown- hat matching, with a band to tone.' Mrs. Perry wore figured crepe de chine/ tho ground being black, and a wide 'black "bat; Mrs. McKenzie wag. jn beige lace, with, a black hat; Mrs. Kershaw's costume was of a- deep tone'of green, and-hat to match; Mrs. W. Jaclcson wore a summer tweed tailleur, and a red straw,.hat; Mrs. Stone's frock was of navy blue, and her hat was of the same shade; Mrs. Page .wore, a; black, and white figured gown, and. a" black hat; Miss Mayer's summer frock was of tangerine and lemon; voiloj'and aimatching hatMiss Kershaw was in white spotted with green, and a greoh hat to,tone; Miss Stone had a pink floral gown. The reception' room'was decorated ' with-flowers and flags, and,, out of doors gay bunting waved in the little breeze that came to cool very hot ; people, the scene being an exceedingly gay one altogether.', ,'. "Bowler's Evening" is planned to take place at the Masonic Hall -on Saturday. A taotor'tJrive has been arranged for Sunday, when tho visitors will be taken to Trentham race-course, and other places of beauty and interest. Other clubs have given the visiting bowlers their privileges, and altogether Wellington is doing its best to make the guests from other parts of the Dominion thoroughly welcome-. '.«•■-■
