INDIAN HAWKER FINED

Pleading guilty before Messrs. E. M. Wylie an.d H. H. Price, JIVs, at the Magistrate's' Court to-day to a charge of stealing a case of oranges, valued at 17s i 6d, the property of Thompson Bros., Ltd., Manga Bhula, an Indian hawkerY aeed 1R was fined £5, in default three days' im'pnsonment. Shortly after 9 o'clock'yesterday morning the accused was seen by a carrier walking about in a suspicious manner in J.nomps,on Bros.' fruit mart. Suddenly he picked up a case of .oranges and carried them toward his lorry. The carrier stopped him and asked him for his receipt for the oranges.,. The accused, then produced two dockets, but on examination they proved to be receipts for two cases of peaches. The carrier advised the accused to put the oranges back and he eventually did so. The accused, who was taken beiore the manager of the mart, and then handed over to the police, was stated to have a conviction for a similar offence in August last.: : It was pointed out by Sub-Inspector Martin that the offence was a serious one, as there was plenty of opportunity at auction marts for persons such as the accused to steal goods. • ' ;
