Architect to the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul's during tKei most momentous year in the cathedral's history, Sir Mervyn Macartney died recently at the age of 79. Shortly after Sir Mervyn's appointment the news came to, light of cracks and other defects in the cathedral fabric Sir Mervyn shouldered the responsibility for the repair of. the vast building. He was rewarded by a knighthood >in -1930. He -retired ■iv 1931. Before going to St. Paul's, Sir Mervyn was consulting architect to Durham Cathedral. He was one of the foundd-s^of the Art Workers' Guild and of the Arts and Crafts Exhibitions Society. " • ■• ■ • .
