A WIDE KANGE

SPORTS AND THEATRES

Whether or not there are more people remaining in the city these holidays than in former years, there will be plenty of fun of all kinds for them. On Boxing Day racing and trotting within easy reach are provided at Manawatu and Carterton, and the Manawatu racing meeting will be continued on the following day. The Plunket Shield cricket match between Wellington and Otago will run over the Monday and Tuesday, as will also t ; he Winter Show Carnival, which includes horse jumping contests for both sexes, steer riding, an athletic programme, and other events. A carnival will be held at Petone beach on both j days. _ The Wellington Lawn Tennis Association's tourney commences on Monday, and will continue until Thursday. The Wellington Bowling Centre's tourney commences on Monday, and will be followed later in the week by tournaments at Eastbourne and Hutt. The centre's carnival will be by sectional play on suburban greens. The Eangatira's excursion to Picton, with special train connection to Blenheim, will be one of the attractions for Wellington holiday-makers^on Monday next. Leaving the Ferry Wharf at 8 a.m.,. the vessel should be. at Picton by half-past 10. The train will leave alniost immediately for Blenheim, giving visitors time for lunch and an inspection of the town before returning to Pieton to catch the steamer. Launches' have been arranged to leave the Picton steamer wharf on the Eangatira's arrival for some of the beauty spots in Queen Charlotte Sound. Picnickers will be supplied with hot water, and in some cases lunch may be obtained at the accommodation houses. The steamer Tuatea will also make a three-hour cruise. The Eangatira will leave on the return trip about 2 p.m., and should be back in Wellington about 5 p.m.

Evening entertainment of a very varied nature will be offering during the holiday period. It should be noted that the picture theatres will screen their, usual programmes on Monday night, Christmas Day this year falling on the Sunday. The list of attractions to-night is headed by Dame Sybil Thorndike at the Grand Opera House, in. '' Saint Joan,''. for which she was ssleeted by Bernard Shaw, the playwright. As will be seen from the advertising columns, there is a very full bill of interesting releases at all the picture theatres, and plenty of dancing.
