Christmas Ball

(Original, by "Shadow Pixie," aged 12.)

F. AIRIES rushed in every direction preparing for the Christmas Ball that that was to be held m the Fairy Ring by the forest. The Fairy King , . .itself was like a hive of busy bees. The biggest ana grandest mushroom at the heatt of the King was decorated'in-cream, for it was the' Throne of Honour-:to_ be occupied by Queen I'ai'riel. About it hung cream-coloured,, starry, clematis. Other mushrooms, big and small, were decorated in colours bright and pale. Tor every fairy guest there was a mushroom, so you may guess the size of the Fairy Ring. : , -In the big tree-trunks were bright "refreshment-"places." ' These quaint shops wero set up with wild-flowers from the woods. The flowers themselves • were springlike with diamond-like dewdrops. . ' ■ Sir, Spider and his family were very busy spinning and weaving, dancing dresses and costumes for the fairies and elves. There was no chance of rain spoilingl the-Ball, as ■ the Sky King had promised a clear, fine night. ■Time passed quickly to those busy workers/and very soon night came. .. All, attired in their best, came and waited .by" their mushrooms for Fairiel. When a soft melodious sound broke out, Queen Fairiel came tripping into the Ring. She was clad in a flowing gown of pure white, while in her long brown hair starry clematis shone. Sudden silence held the assembled guests , as Fairiel> standing by her grand mushroom,'began to speak, i Folk!" she said. "This is another Christmas we are to spend together. As last year we had a Christmas tree, to-night we will have a "Cracker Surprise." I hope you will all enjoy and remember this nightas you haye1 the others." : .■.■;.■■;.'... . v - As she sat down the hushed silence broke, and a burst of applause greet-, ed her. Then,,forming pairs, they danced to the sweet music as it sounded forth. Attendant fairies in the "refreshment places" were kept, busy, for, from time to time the dancers visited the pretty'shops. '. ■As a clashing cord sounded from the orchestra, all fairy folk took their seats. To a soft, quick march, a huge cracker was borne-in by six elves.dress- - od in red. In colour the cracker was red and gold., The elves, three at each end, pulled hard, and when the cracker split in two, from the inside came Santa Claus arranged in his red-and-white costume. In his bag was a present for everyone. When the cracker was removed and placed behind Fairiel's throne, dancing began again. Not until Dawn's elves came running to the Ring, to tell them that Dawn was on her way to the earth, did the party break up. All Fairies declared it the best, of all balls, and they were overjoyed when Fairiel announced another ball to bo held in .the New Year.
