CHEQUES
. -A series of .charges, including tKeft-and fraudulently: obtaining clothing and-_ money by means of valueless cheques, was brought against James-Ives O'Shea, aged 38, George Charles Waterman, aged 36,. and James Beran.Shaw Rice, aged 32, at the Mgistrate's Court' to-day, O'Shea .'and Waterman pleaded guilty to.three charges of obtaining clothing and money- by means of valueless cheques and one- charge-of theft. -Rice: pleaded gnflty.to one-charge of theft and one charge of . obtaining money by means of a valueless cheque. Detective-Sergeant. Revell said: that on 24th May O'Shea Trent to the Post Offiea to "collect; some mail; He waa handed a letter/ addressed "James O'Shea" and was asked if it -was his. He opened the letter' and" said that it -svas "not, "tut he saw. that two £1 notes were, enclosed. Lat«r- O'Shea sent Waterman to the Post Office'; and-Waterman •represented{that he w-as James-O'Shea- and obtained possession of .the letter. ; On 7th November- Rice stolet a cheque book.from the room of a Mr: :McDonald.: Q!Shea filled in one of the forms for ;£6 ss, and on the follo-w----lng day he Waterman cashed - it, O'Shea filled in two further cheques which were also cashed. Waterman waa associated -with both these transactions, but Rice with one only.\.. Mr. A. B. Croker,. who ■ appeared for Rice, said his client had been On a Continuous drinking'bout since he finished a term of' imprisonment in September. "He had been unable tp obtain employment or to benefit or consolidate his position in any. way. Counsel- said he had agcertamed that Kice would be able to obtain employment-early in the New: Year in Australia, and asked the Magistrate (Mr. E. Page) to impose a short term o£ imprisonment.
The Magistrate sentenced each of the accused, to six months' imprisonment.
