HAPPINESS WEEK

THE QUEEN CONTEST;

PUBLIC SERVICE LEADING

MANY ATTRACTIONS

The count of votes in the Happiness Week queen contest last evening placed the Public Service candidate, Miss C. S. Forde, in the lead with a margin of 720 votes, but where tens of thousands of votes have to be counted this is anything but conclusive. The queens jyid their votes as shown in the last count are:— Public Service, Miss O. S. Forde 15,220 Traffic, Miss M. C. MeEvedy .. 14,500 Movie World, Miss Peggy Welch 12,300 Radio, the Mystery Queen .... 12,216 Sports, Miss Edna Norwood .. 12,096 There are in this contest, as in queen candidate contests from the beginning of the carnival idea, quite a few legitimate tricks of trade, and the certainty ,is that some of the committees are holding a fine bundle of votes up their sleeves with the idea of upsetting calculations at . the last minute. The count, then, is interesting, but anything may happen. Possibly Sports have a good four thousand, votes put away in cold storage; possibly Public Service have just as many. That being so, the committees are taking no chances. < Various attractive raftles are offered, from, ears and gas ovens. to Christmas dolls; concert tickets, ball tickets, invitations.to all sorts of functions and entertainments are to be had for the price of a few votes, and in addition to the larger public functions many smaller parties, dances, and so on arc being arranged. A COMBINED QUEEN'CONCERT. The main attraction 'this evening will be the concert in the Town Hall in Which all five candidates are combining. The voting plan is unusual and the successful candidate should profit by a very large number of. votes. Each candidate is . providing five items on the programme, and the audience will vote on the popularity of each item. The queen whose items meet with most approval will be credited with the total number of votes cast. The programme promises an evening.of most varied and enjoyable entertainment. At 12.30 to-morrow a community sing will be held in the Town Hall, under the leadership of Mr. asid Mrs. Albert Russell, Mr; Will Mason, and Mr. Owen Pritchard. Mr. Frank Crowther and Mr. Joe Duncan will supply the accompaniments.. . : . _ In the evening an exceptionally fine programme -will be given in the Town Hall by the Combined Schools Choir, under the direction of Mr. Ernest Jonner, a.r;A.m. ■•' ■: '"• . On Thursday evoning the Sunshine Ball is to be held in the Town Hall. In the main the Sunshine Ball will be along the lines of the. most successful Cinderella Ball held a few months ago. The hall will be decorated as a palm court and spectacular ballets and solo items will be provided by Wellington's most accomplished dancers. Friday . night is to be '^Mystery Night," ana that, is all the organisers and committees are saying: about it just now, but, judging from the amount of preparation work that is being done, the mystery is to be on a fairly bie scale.,* . .. y usi

_ On Saturday night the closing function will be held. Voting will close at 9 o'clock, and at 10.30 the result of the final count will be' announced and the winning candidate will be crowned in a spectacular ceremony. " • . :: r The whole, of the proceeds will go toward the Mayor's Fund for the relief of distress, so that the carnival serves two good purposes, to brighten up the air of the city when it really needs it, and to, collect funds.urgently needed for those who are less fortunate than they deserve to be. -
