RACING AT TAKAPUNA

GREAT EMBLEM'S SUCCESS

FAVOURITES' GOOD DAY;

(By Telearaph.)

(Special to "Tha Evening. Post,")

AUCKLAND, This Day

Favourites had a great innings at the conclusion of the'Takapuna Jockey Club's Spring Meeting yesterday, six winning and two running second. The track was fast, ihere was a fair attendance, and the totahsatpr investments were £15,534, compared with £17,213 on the: second day last year. The total for the two" clays was £36,0/6, compared with £!O,IBS last year, a decrease of £4112. FIRST OF FAVOURITES. :Pelrain was,:ithe popular fancy for the Vaiixhall Handicap,-, and,-".after following Princess ■- Star ..and Roman. Mas-' cotto the home- turn, he came onto win from the fas|-finishing Top Light, an outsider .who \retii.rned nearly double figures for second: Mungatoon, a shade unlucky, was third,;.but he-did not finish as well as. either, of the pair just in front of him. Top Light had the worst of the running, and he might have won if he had hot had to cover so much ground round the turn, :•-. ;- -. > ; ,-■ ■ . : ' THESPIS'S HIGHWEIGHT. Thospis was an odds-on favourite for the Kawau Highweight Handicap, and he proved the good thing the betting indicated he was. He lay third behind Principal and Royal England in the early stages, but he was'taken; up on the outside of Glen Haupo" When she dashed to the front three furlongs from home. After that he never looked like being beaten, and although he was given a few reminders with the whip in the straight he won easily at.the end. Glen Haupo returned a good price for second, and her form was an improvement on any she had previously shown. . Royal Visitor was just a fair third, and Sub-Editor was fourth. . AN OVERDUE WIN. ■•In spite of an unplaced performance on the first day,: Merry Lap was a" good'favourite.'for the' Stanley Handicap, and he just failed, '. b.eing: narrowly , beaten by Valpai.... The winner had run . fourth in each of his;three previous starts/but he was at a fairly good- price. He deserved his success, because he had none the best of the ruririing and came right round the leaders at the turn; where Merry Lap also had" to go to the outside after being cut oft early. Curfajong and Senorita: also ran good races. Lord Willonyx tired just at. the .end, and, should-be a good prospect for a race at Dargaville. " • - -, \ ; A PROCESSION. ..■'•' "'',■ The Cairtley Handicap was practically a procession, the odds-on favourite Exaggeration putting a break on,the field'nearing thfe; .turn .and .'winning easily- from Tradesman, who- was,-always her closest attendant. :''-■-■. r .i'---'?."-': : ■ .-_ ; ., WON FROM THE BACK. / ..-The St. Andrew's "Handicap provided: a fine .finish,.; Great Emblem, cdruing from the - rear ; with: the'last run to wrest the honours fronir Speedmiiit in .the last few strides.; Speedinint also came from a fair way back,, but :eould;'not "quite hold; off Great Emblem, .who. ca,me : round on the outside at the turn. Speedmint has been unlucky lately, having run three successive seconds. Teels, who dashed to the -front nearing:. the home turn, was a good third, and, Maori -Boy a :close fourth. Wh.aka.para-struck some trouble early and could not go on in-the straight after making a sharp: move at the home turn. ANOTHER GAY SHIELD. Tavern Knight, who' is trained by L. M. Mansbn, made an auspicious debut in the Rakino' Handicap -when he won practically from end to end. Gay Sheila jumped • put-clear; but $he was seen outpaced by Tavern Knight, who stayed on well when challenged, by: Deputy. Ruler/at the finish; The winner; was braclveted witlr. Coronis, .w.hoifisi;raeed.-bv'*hia-'breedeiv.Dr. E. H, Milsom .-He' 13' tf-smart-looking youngster l3^..Gay.,;Shiel4 .frmnl'Shebang,. and is- iust-co-niing to hand, a'fterjHayiiigibeen affected with; a. severe cold- on; -the- eve- of the early spring 'meetings: -'Gay: Sheila; and Coronis both ' disappointed^ -although Gay' Sheila might, have been''closer if "more . usel'had been. Tnadeof her [early, advantage. ' Hz:- ',';■;'■: \; ■";: A-;' GAMELE FAI LS.".'';'.-' ■ *fe - ;■. Bejltopper,; the- fayo.urite', .attempted;' -to win the-, Pupu.ke Handicap -all: the ■ way, but he .weakened slightly near, the ,end !aisd was beaten; h'ome'\by:. Glehr.ata-' and Holly Holm, who were just, behind; him entering the. straight. Holly ..Holm was: a shade unMpky>- as he'receiyed/a'! check 'when seeking an:opening/at the turn, t- . ~ ' ' •'"" PAGANELLI'S SPRINT, The lightweight, Glen Vane, who was made a good second-choice to'^Paganelli, set.the. field a fast pace iir the "early -stages of the jSTgataringa Handicap, and was kept right up. to^his work Wlion Jaeldy 'Kai 0 joined liim in .the middle1 stages. As a resillt'he tired afc the end and .was beaten by. both Paganelli; and Jaeldy; Karo. Paganelli. wag, in the rear for itlie ', first halfmile, but lie went up fast near the turn and made no race of it in the straight. , /RESULTS IN DETAIL. ■Results .were:— - .. .. • ■ .-. . : Vauxliiiil'itaiiaicap,' of 100 soys; six fur-lougs.-r-l Eelraln,, 8.8 (Voitre), 1; 10 Top Light. 7.7; 2; 3 Muhpratoon, 8.7, 3.
