I A meeting of the committee of the Wellington Swimming Centre was held last I evening. Mr. N. McCartney presided. . The proposed tour of the Dominion by overseas swimmers has been abandoned, owing to financial difficulties. The New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association has stated that, though a. visit would be of considerable value, it is unable to undertake the financial responsibility. A remit from the Canterbury Centre, that club registration fees should not be paid this season and next season, was opposed, and a counter-resolution was passed. The following dates have been approved by the N.Z.A.S.A. for the New Zealand championship meetings:—Junior and intermediate championships (at Invercargill),'26th, 27th,-and 28th January;. senior championships (at Napier), 18th, 20th, and 22nd February. N.Z. ASSOCIATION
The .annual rep.ort pf .the. N.ew Zealand Amateur Swimming ' Association' states that activities were somewhat Jiampere.d by economic difficul.ties\<J.urjng the' paft year". The restriction' "of firian'tiaT support resulted in the New Zealand ..championships failing to come up to monetary expectations, and losses were experienced by some bodies conducting earuivals.
After having carried on educational work during, the 1930-31 season without a. grant from the Government, the council was compelled at the commencement of the season under review to abandon any further attempt to conduct the work o£ encouraging, by means of certificates, the learning of swimming by school children.
As the result of participation in an art union, £300 had been received, but it is pcinre'tt out that "the Government has failed altogether to appreciate the importance of the work which the association 'has, for 'years' carried out among the school children of the Dominion."
Medals for future championship meetings are to be manufactured in New Zealand.
Appreciative reference to the services of the secretary, Mr. B. O'Neill, is made by Mr. W. E. D. Bishop, president. ■" • :
