WRESTLING

TWO PROFESSIONAL BOUTS

MCLAUCHLAN BEATS

NAYLER

In conjunction with the Happiness Week Committee, the ■Wellington Wrestling Association staged two professional bouts in the Town Hall last night. In the lirst, I\. La Force beat auothev newcomer to Wellington, Tom Hobiuson, by two ! l:alls in a match which hud little to recommend it, and in the main bout Jock I McLauchlan, of Australia, beat Leu Kaj--ler, of Auckland. This was a very even contept, and there was little between the two men throughout the eight rounds they were .in the ring, McLauchlan only obtaining the deciding fall in the last round. La Force weighed lOst 61b and Robinson 9st 81b, and very early in the bout it was apparent that what little knowledge of wrestling the pair had between them was possessed by La Force, who after setting his own pace, and not making it too fast, won the first fall in the second round with a headloek and body press after foiling Robinson's attempt at a flying tackle. The chief excitement of the third round v/as provided when the wrestlers, in an unusuai burst of energy, became mixed up and, in contrast with their earlier efforts, actually showed some desire to remain locked together when the referee went .to separate them. It was very poor work, but the audience showed a surprising forbearance. Nevertheless there was a loud general sigh of relief when La Force, after many crude attempts, managed to take a second fall from his opponent in the fifth round and thus end the affair. In marked contrast with the efforts ot the first two professionals was an exhibition bout between C. Lowe (list 21b) and K. Allan (list 31b). The two well-known amateurs turned on a bright and attractive display, working fast and introducing a wide variety of holds, and the audience did not' fail to show its appreciation. A KEEN CONTEST. ■Seldom is a wrestling match so closely I contested as was that between McLauchlan (list 101b)r and Nayler (list 71b). The fortunes of-a hard match favoured-first one and then the other, and as the bout went into the eighth round, each man having a| fall to his credit, it looked as if it would end in a draw. McLauchlan, however, managed to get his second fall about halfway through the round.- A section of the audience did • not think Nayler's shoulders were on the mat, but there was do doubt that the decision of the referee (Mr. George Bennett) was correct. The exchanges were fairly even in the j first round,- and both men secured some useful holds. Nayler ran out of his corner across the ring the instant the gong sounded for the second- round, but McLauchlan was. on the alert and he countered his opponent's ' attempt at a tackle. Nayler gave ■ McLauchlan some painful moments.- The Aucklander was now right into his stride, and although he was tipped through the ropes twice, he continued --.to- attack vigorously. After both wrestlers had fallen into the crowd McLauchlan assumed the offensive when the pair returned to the ring and they were going strongly at the end of the round. Further hard wrestling marked the third round, and there was still little between the men when the fourth round opened. Nayler started well, and a few minutes after the- rfffmtl had commenced he took the first fall, McLauchlan sub-mittihg-to..a.,body scissors and face bar. ;' Working hard, generally with a shortarnv.v.scissors.'•:. on Nayler's right arm, McLaudlilan ; went close to.equalising the falls --m...the.- fifth round; but the Aucklander /resisted strongly and MeLauchlan had to wait until early in the sixth round' before he weakened Nayler's arm sufficiently to get a fall. In the last round McLauchlan, still persevering with a short' arm scissors, managed to make Nayler's shoulders touch the mat as he sat on top.of him. ■?';, CUPS PRESENTED.
