THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL

HIS" WIDE INTEREST

TRIBUTE BY DR. MARSDEN

Prior to His Excellency the GovernorGeneral, Lord Bledisloe, reading his paper on "The Economic < Value of Agricultural Science," at Wednesday's meeting of the Wellington Philosophical Society, Dr. E.1 Marsden, as chairman, said he would like to take that opportunity of acknowledging on behalf of the society tho obligations which they and tho people of New Zealand in general owed to His Excellency for^ the cordial interest he took •in the promotion of Science and Art in New Zealand.

"We desire," he said, "especially to recognise the influence which lie "has exercised in this respect, not only in his capacity as Governor-General of this Dominion, but also from the high position he has occupied in the councils of tho British Association and tho various research institutes in Great Britain by his practical advancement of knowledge.- For amidst the cares incident to his high office he has not only found leisure to visit personally and commune with our various scientific workers^ but has given the practical example of his own labours. His interest has not been from an armchair but from human personal contacts with our workers and with our people. We beg especially to thank him for the great work he has achieved in bringing home to the people tho necessity ftfr continued scientific outlcok and effort in connection .with the problems of industry, and particularly those appertaining to our primary industries. Changes of outlook in•_ this regard occur slowly, and particularly in an intellectually isolated country such as ours it is necessary to show that the scientific outlook in our national problems is the only one which will lead us back to happier days."
