FREEZING DISPUTE

I . FARMERS' ATTITUDE

WILL HELP THE WORKS

The freezing -workers' dispute was discussed in committee by the Dominion executive of . the Farmers' Union yesterday afternoon. One- of the remits before tho meeting was as follows: — "That the Dominion executive take steps to give the Freezing Works' Association an assurance that in the event .of their standing firm for a substantial reduction in the present award rates, the New Zealand Farmers' Union will undertake to supply men to man the works in the event of trouble." It was later stated officially that it had been decided that the members of the Farmers' Union should help the freezing works throughout the Dominion, to carry on during the season if the regular freezing workers refused employment. The Auckland executive wrote forwarding a resolution suggesting further negotiations with the freezing workers. The Auckland representatives present reported that their executive had heard both sides of the matter and had then intimated that while- the export of produce could not bo allowed to be held up, they were inclined to the view that the matter had not been well handled, and should have been capable of settlement by negotiation. It seemed, however, that this was not now possible. Tho letter was received. *
