BIG IMPROVEMENT

RAILWAY FINANCES

"FAITH IN THE BOARD"

Faith in the Railways Board was expressed by Mr. J. A. Nash (Goyernment, Palmerston) in "the House of Representatives last night in his speech on the Financial- Debate. He said that the board had already brought about a big improvement in the railway finances, and was doing its work in a businesslike manner. "I believe that the railways will be brought back again and be made to pay their way," said Mr. Nash, who added that for months past the returns of income had been greater than the expenditure. The opinion of the people in regard to the railways was changing. He remembered the late Sir Joseph Ward making a statement that the railways were a community benefit, and that a loss of one. or two millions per year did not matter. The railways had been losing money for a, long time, but they were not always to blame. Sir Joseph Ward, in an effort to clean up the unemployment problem, had put about 800 men on the railways, and the result was that the board, when it took over, had had to spend a great deal of time in an endeavour to reduce the number of men in the service. "I have great faith in the board," said Mr. Nash. "I am sure that if they are given every chance and thereis no interference, they will do the job."
