SAVING POSSIBLE

EDUCATION BOARDS

ABOLITION URGED

Support for "the abolition of Education Boards with a view to. enlarging th« powers and functions of school committees, was indicated by Mr. J. A, Nash (Government, Palmerston) in thai course of his Budget debate speech ia the House of Bepresentatives last night. Mr. Nash said .that some years agoj an analyas had been made in connect tion with Education Boards administration, and this had shown .conclusively that between £60,000 and £70,000 could be saved annually if the boards were abolished. Mr. S.- 6. Smith (Government, Neir Plymouth): That was proved afterwards to be inaccurate. "I think the figures will stand today," replied Mr. Nash, who added that he had always been an advocate of the abolition" of the boards. The whole arrangement . could be so adjusted as to raise the status of the school committees and give them more authority. At present the committees had" to try to raise money to keep the ground in order, provide baths, and pay the wages of ths caretaker, yet when it came to a question of responsibility that was removed from their hands. The committees were entitled to more consideration, and this could be provided if their status wera raised. . . ■ . Mr. Nash also advocated that technical and secondary schools in/,the on» district should be brought under the control of the one governing body with, the object of reducing the present heavy, cost of administration.
