FLEMINGTON TO-MORROW

The seventy-eighth Victoria Derby is set down for decision_ on the opening'day of the Victoria Eaeiiig Club's Spring, Meeting at Flemington to-moiw -. What a host of memories are entwined in-the history of the blue riband of the Victorian Turf! Kew Zealand-bred horses to have won include Jlartini-Henry, Nordentelt; Strathmore, Carnage, and Phar Lap. Biplane, . another winner, was Australianbred, but he was owned in the Dominion by (the late Mr. G. D. Greenwood. Xew Zealand will be represented to-morrow by Game Carrington, bred and owned in the Dominion.- . .',.:,. To-morrow's full programme is as' follows:—Wakeful Stakes, of 500 soys, for three-year-old fillies, one mile; Maribyrnong Pl«te, of 1000 soys', for two-year-olds five furlongs; Melbourne Stakes, of 750 ao.vs, standard weight-for-age, one mile and a quarter; Victoria Derby, 4000 soys added, for three-year-old entire coltsl and fillies, one mile and a half; Cantala Stakes, of lotio soys, one mile; and Hotham Handicap, of 400 soys, one mile and a half. The only Dominion winner on the. opening day last year was Orrftoriaff, who scored in the Maiden Plate', for which the Wakeful Stakes has been substituted this year in accordance with the V.R.C. Committee's decision to provide another c-lawic besides the Oaks confined to three-year-old fillies. Concentrate ran Phar Lap to half a length in the Melbourne Stakes, thus advancing to, a.. close second favourite to the champion for the following Tuesday's Cup. Ammon Ka, one of the hottest favourites on record, was beaten into fourth place in the Derby, won by Johnnie Jasrori. The Melbourne Cup winner-to-be, the South Australian.White Nose, scored an easy win in the Hotham Handicap, for which he was. one of the outsiders.
