Speaking at the meeting ;of the Protection Society last evening, Mrs. Sprott put forth a brave proposition in the direction of doing something special for the entertainment of children and also of those people who had but little patience with films showing either foolish, exaggerated views of life, or definitely meretricious and vulgar ones. At the same time, sbe said, it was a pity to make too much of the educational side. People needed laughter and joy in life, and young and old were the better for a good laugh. She instanced the works of Gilbert and Sullivan as being full of humour of the clean kind, and said that appreciation of this was shown in the great attendances at the theatres whenever their works appeared. She thought that if a special effort to gather funds could be made to establish one play-house where clean, amusing films were the order of the day always and could be relied, upon, people would find it a great relief. With special programmes for children at matinees and holidays, with tho fine films added for older people (such as were mentioned as being obtainable in the British Film report) she thought "quite a fortune" might be made through the attendance of people of clean and educated taste. Many at present did not go to tho picture., except on rare occasions, as they could not stand mere foolishness. Mrs. Sprott paid a. tribute to the interest and value of the "Gazettes" and world pictures shown, also the nature and travel, studies, which were thoroughly appreciated, and of which many people would like a greater quantity.
