LATE SPORTING

CUP HOBSES GALLOP

NOTES FROM RICGARTON

The weather at last broke1 "fine in Canterbury on Wednesday night, and the track was open for galloping at fiiccarton yesterday morning. Parts of the course proper were waterlogged, but the outside trial grass track, which was used for fast work, illustrated tlie truth of the often-heard contention that Eiccarton is never unraceable. The track was holding, but not more than that, and it did little more than level the times of the fast workers. The early arrivals, of course, had the best of it, but none of these was pitted seriously against the watch (says "Stindridgc").

Horses that hit out better, than the majority, without reference to times done, were Elude, Metal Bird, Full Crop, Argentic, Shatter, Eothen, Lord Mashani, Pixie Gold, and Water Polo. Shatter gave Craigavon three lengths' start and beat him home over a mile in lmin 48sec. Shatter did not appear to be greatly hampered by the conditions. Later, Concentrate covered a mile, with Top Bank carrying him along for two; furlongs. The Cup candidate was doing it at little better than three-quarter pace.

Night Flyer and Eamo cut out seven furlongs in lrnin 35sec. Adelphi had Tout le Mond in front of him throughout in a six furlongs gallop, which, took lmin 23sec. Neither acted very well. Suncloud and Polydora required lmin 24 3-ssec, finishing together. Earthquake, paired by The Sun, made good practice by clocking lmin 21 4-ssec. She is in nice shape. Metal Bird's run in lmin 19- 4-osee was a very pleasing effort.. Ho began well and carried on at an even rate. Socket and Fleeting Glance also ran six furlongs in company.

Over -five furlongs, Weatherly beat Taunton in lmin 7 3-ssec, and Argentic ran the same distance in lmin 6 4-5, sec, a creditable performance. Belvoir also went five, but was stopping. Wise Choice beat Sharp, Thorn in lmin 7sec. With a good weight up,- Elude ran home the last half-mile of a work-out in 52sec. He is a great horse for heavy going. :

Waiter Polo was doing better than Nightguard-to register 52 2-osec. Sam Smith and True Shaft took 53 2-ssee. Pixie Gold beat Gold Cross, going nicely at y the finish, in 52see. Night Becital beat Battle Hero in 52 6-osec. Full Crop, a Stewards' Handicap candidate, easily accounted for Piceard in 53see.'

Lord Masham and Usquebaugh, ran four up the back in 52 2-ssec. Golden Dart beat Eobin Hood in 53 2-osec; Tea Garden and Eeserve Fund took 52 3-asec. Juniper, up the back, ran the first four of five furlongs in 53 1-osee. Shelter and Clorane, over the same ground, required 53sec for half a mile. Elgindale and Rothen , answered the roll in 52see. Both these went well. Grecian Prince, up the back, ran 53 1-5 sec ■ , •,

Locksley and Chief Light cut out three furlongs up the back in 39 3-osec. Hurlingham and Banelagh -covered- a similar distance in similar time at the other end.
