A: special general; meeting of the Wellington South Chess Club, which-has,been in recess for some time past, wai "held at 64, Courtenay place, on Saturday eveningwhen Mr. ;W. X._ Kelhnff ■ were; also present, and apologies for. non-attendance were received froin'Messrs. J. L. Hardy, H. Douglas, H. H. Hart. J.;E: Round, A. W. Weinel G. Walker, and A. Clark. The chairman made feeling reference; to the great loss that, the ,club-had'sustained on the Ist instant by; the death of Mr. p.' ?urchas, who had been ; the club's honorary secretary and. treasurer for^many years past. He. paid an.eloquent.tribute to Mr. Purchases fine record of service, to his success as: a.player,'arid also' to the very high esteem in?which, he.was held by his many friends. Members stood in silence as. a mark; of .respect, to their late executive officer, who,, it may be added, took first prize in'five of the club's tourneys. On the motion of the chairman, Mr. P. K. Kelling was appointed to carry, on the duties of'honoraryTsecretary and honorary treasurer. Messrs. G. P. Anderson,' H. E. Ashby, and :H;>Easton were appointed to act with the• club's officers as a'generaf and match committee. It was decided to ascertain if Saturday, 15th. October,; would suit the Wellingtbri.Chess Club "as the date for the holding of'the proposed Purchas memorial match, in which ex-members o£ both clubs are being invited to take part. LOCAL TOURNAMENTS. . The tourney"-for, the championship •of .the Wellington Chess -Club is almost completed. ' The three leaders are !E. A. Hicks, 9-2, (8 wins,. 2 draws, and l'loss): G ? P , Anderson, 6%-!%^ and 3,-to playj and A. W, Gyles, 7-2, and 2 to play. Much, therefore, depends on the adjourned game, Gyles v. Anderson, iin .which the Tatter holds a. one-pawn advantage in a. difficult ending:! To remain ia, the- hunt, Gyles needs ■to ,win this game. On the other hand, Anderson-,will require to win from Gyles, Otto, and Sim if he is to gain the title without a ■ play-off. A most interesting: finish' 19 thus assured. In the B grade event, K. A.; Godtschalk is leading, closely followed by Dr. Myers. E. C. Cflass is leading in the" C grade competition, with three rounds to go. There are eleven competitors in the handicap ("Petherick") .tourney, in which. R. A. GodtBchalk is leading witH the good tally of 8 wins, 1 loss, and 1 to play (F. Dewhurst). Messrs. F. Grady and J. L. Hardy and Master Charlie Dallas (of Mount-Cook School) are iri close pursuit. • Twenty members are competing for the chess championship of the Wellington Working Men's Club: and Literary Institute. Play is proceeding rapidly, several entrants having got off more than half their fixtures.. The issue is now narrowed down to S.Faulknor, 9-0; E. E. Hicks, 10-0; W., J. Fairburri, 13-1; and K. Beyer, 12%-1%. . A ; close finish may be looked for. F. K. Kelling is leading in the tourney ~for the Ngaio. Club's championship,'- while four members .are at present, bracketed ■ for, second* place, viz., S. Faulknory.E.E. Hicks, G..A. Jones, and H. Godtschalk. There are four .more rounds to be contested, and a number of adjourned games to be accounted for. Two special prizes have been offered for this tourney, viz. (a) chess manuel by Dr. E. Lasker (for 26 years the. world's chess champion), and (b) the book of the London International Chess Tournament, 1932 (with very full annotations by Dr. A. Alekhine, the present world champion). The championship of the Wadestown Chess Club has been won by Mr. J. Morton for.the fourth year in succession. Mr. H. Godtschalk was the runner-up, while Messrs. R. A. Godtschalk, E. J. Dyer, and D. Roberts tied for third place. The club s handicap tourney was won by Mr. R. Battersby. It is hoped to give at an early date the results of the tourneys that ate being held,by the Brooklyn, Miramar and .Hutt Valley Clubs. '
