FRUIT HANDLING AND INSPECTION
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —It is very gratifying to note that the long delayed question of fruit distribution and inspection is at last being brought before those who are-responsible; for this section of the industry. In your Friday's issue, under the heading, "The Fruit Industry," among the remits carried at the Fruit Growers' Conference is one of the utmost importance to the trade and.public I alike —viz., "That some form of' national registration and licensing by the Department of Agriculture of hawkers-of fruit be brought into force and that inspection of fruit go further than onlythat offered for sale at auction." " . ~l - ' v This is a question that should be seriously taken up by_ all those who-have the welfare of the fruit\and vegetable trade to consider, as the whole trade throughout the Dominion has of late years developed into a Dick-Tom-and-Harry common garden hawking affair. The present system is most unfair to those with proper business premises who keep their .goods under clean, healthy conditions and depend upon, their legitimate trade to \support them. I would suggest that while the question of fruit distribution, esc., is being discussed the whole of the legitimate trade get together and the method of distribution be carefully considered. The best and cleanest method tocari-y on the business both for the trade and consumer is
to canvass for your orders and then deliver fresh.from the store, thus eliminating undue handling and ensuring goods arriving with all the "bloom" on. lam sure the public would appreciate the^ difference to the mutual benefit and general unlifting of the trade. —I am, etc.,
CLEAN FOOD.
