DAYLIGHT SAVING

EXTENSION. OF -PERIOD

PRIME MINISTER MAY BE APPROACHED

Sir |Thomas Sidey, M.L.C., has not yet decided whether he will make representations to the Prime Minister

(the Bight Hon.,G. W. Forbes) icgarding increasing the duration of the daylight saving period.

Discussing tho position with a "Post" representative- to-day, Sir Thomas said that during the recess, he sent a questionnaire to 67 members of Parliament—all the European members of 'the House with the. exception of Ministers.' Fifty replies had been received.

An analysis of the answers showed that one-third of the members Were opposed to any, change at all; and there seemed to be a majority of the members opposed to increasing the amount of daylight saving; to one hour daily. There was, he thought, a majority of members, in favour of increasing the period by_ bringing in daylight saving a month earlier than was now the case.

Sonic members had suggested that standard-time,.should be advanced by.i half an hour, making daylight saving permanent all the year round-, continued Sir Thomas, but this, would have serious results in <the far south. It would mean, for that in Invercargill, the sun would not rise until 23 minutes to 9in midwinter. He would lik© members who were in t favour of an all-the-year-round "advance of the clock to give serious, consideration to that fact. Sir ' Thomas is now considering ■whether'Jio should make, representations to the Prime Minister to introduce an amendment extending the duration of tho daylight saving period.
