Yesterday morning His Excellency; the Governor-Gene*ral attended. at-. St;' John's Presbyterian Church a special service held, in accordance with a custom of some years' standing, to observe the opening of Parliament.

Bishop, secretary o£ tho New Zealand Employers* Federation, returned to "Wellington on Saturday. Captain H. Donald, Inspector" of Seamen at the Government Shipping Office, Wellington, is to leave on Wednesday for Lyttelton, where he will relieve Captain A. "E. Crisp, who has been appointed a pilot. Captain D. JlcLeay will lelieve Captain Donald at Wellington. Deep regret at the loss suffered by the association- in : the death of its chairman, Mr. W. E. Bock," was expressed by the president (Mr. C. G. , Wilson) at the annual meeting of the Wellington Umpires' Association. The president referred to the Jong record, cf service given by the. late Mr. Bock, who, during his lengthy term as chairman, had been absent from only one meeting. Mr. Earle, after, reviewing the history of "The Dominion," expressed his appreciation of the loyalty shown' to him by the staff throughout quarter of a century. The time had arrived, he said, when he could not go on. carrying the load he had teen carrying; ho had discussed tho matter with the directtors and had advised them of his intention to relinquish part of his duties. He would, therefore, hand over the editorship of tho paper to 'other hands within, the nest few months and would confine his future activities to the,. duties of managing director. • . ">.
