CALCUTTA, 18th September. Mr. Gandhi appears to be determined to carry his starvation threat into operation. Replying to a telegram from Mr. G. Birla, a wealthy industrialist, Mr. Gandhi rejoices that the "opportunity has come for offering a final sacrifice for the downtrodden millions, '' and says that it is quit© certain the fast cannot be postponed. Hindu leaders have telegraphed to the Viceroy seeking his permission' to interview Mr. Gandhi' in Yeravada Gaol.
Meanwhile the Hindus are negotiating with the depressed classes on the question, of electorates, and Dr. Moonje, representing the Hindu orthodoxy, has offered the untouchables equal representation on a* basis of joint» electorates, in order to a-vert the latter's isolation' from Hinduism.
