Captain Cyril Uwins, aged 40, an Air Force war-time pilot, broke the world altitude record in a special 550 horse-power Pegasus Bristol aeroplane, reaching a height of 45,000 ft, compared with the German record of 43,200 ft. He descended at Evesham, where an official of the Boyal Aero Club removed his barographs.
For two hours Captain TJwins used oxygen-pumping apparatus . and elec-trically-heated" goggles, gloves, shoes, and clothing. The engines responded perfectly despite the fact that. 100 degrees of frost was encountered.
Captain Uwina, whose neck was broken, in a war-time crash, flies with a metal support.to keep the vertebrae together. > . p
