THE WANGANUI CARD

GLANCE OVER ACCEPTORS

MOST ISSUES ARE OPEN

The excellent acceptances received by the Wanganui Jockey Club for the opening day of its Spring Meeting on Thursday assures that the meeting will bo a success from the racing standpoint. Every field has filled well, and it looks almost certain thab there will be two dividends in each event. The programme is similar to what it was last year, except that the Guineas has been- dropped, giving a day's card of seven events,, instead of eight as there were twelve months ago. On the second day, however,, there will again foe eight events. • On Thursday a two-year-old parade will open. the : proceedings' at noon,. in a way compensating for the absence of the Guineas. •'--'/ .-. - . ■ By a • coincidence . the acceptances for Thursday.numbers'exactly the- same as they did' for the .seven '.corresponding events last year, 4 that to. say 83. There, was in addition twelve months ago \ a final payment of eight for the"Cuineas. The distribution this year, however, is rather different. In the. PutiUi' Hack, Handicap, the Seafield Handicap, andvthe Marangai Handicap there is a better acceptance this year, in the Durie Hack Handicap it is the same/and in the Maiden Race, the Okehu Hightweight (Okehu Hurdles last year), arid the Flying Handicap there is a smaller acceptance. Last year the open handicap (Marangai Handicap) drew only five entries; but all accepted and finally ran. This year there were eight entries, all except Chopin meeting the acceptance. . . . ■ ' '■ SOME NEW MAIDENS. The Maiden Race introduces four new horses in All Supreme (by Chief Ruler), Cape Fair (by Cape Horn), Linoleum (by Limond), and Boon (by Pombal). The public will probably pass .these by just at present in preference for Dakar, Illuminelli, Swift and Sure, and Hawora. The ton pair, Fernden and Hemy of Navarre, will be supported in the Okehu Highweight, but Warfille and Platina will not be without friends. An interesting ■runner will-be Okopua, who has an engagement in the New Zealand Cup and who has not contested a. flat e\ent for over ..eighteen months. Among those who will piobablv make the principal appeal in the Putiki Hack Handicap aie Ankitca (unbeaten in two starts), Kotdhi Eka, Thiasher, and Seamond. The Dm-ie Hack Handicap, which is a sweepstakes with added money, offers a very open issue indeed, in which Bambury may be the favourite, with Ganpat Gay Court, Chief Marionette, Posy, and t j T.weU fancied among the rest, and ™y K?P Bli ,a, Possible upsetting factor. ihe Seafield Handicap, an open 7.7 minimum event run over seven and a quarter furlongs, offers the W.R.C. Whyte handicap winner, Royal Bengal, an excellent chance. _ Orby's Choice, AH Humbug, and Grand July may pro* ide principal opposition. CHANCE TO ATONE. On his Martqn effort Atholspoar will be m demand with one pound moie in the Marangai Handicap, but at 41b better terms Ruanui looks like turning the tables on .him. The Marton race was falsely run, however, and Teller and Little Doubt have tneir chance of making amends here. Gibraltar, s name among the acceptors would indicate that his bleeding attack last week was not viewed senously. Vitaphone, on the minimum, has not lately been noticed out on the track, but he has probably been working late and i/Den last seen he was in excellent order. Still he is a pure hack as yet. Jhe day's programme will be biought to a close with the Flying \landicap, an open Sp-?T?A n OrsPal w°n the event last year with 9.0, and he is not badly in with 41b less this year. He should certainly be capable of improving on his fourth lecentJy at New Plymouth, as that was his first race for some months. A fresh pair who may go well first time up after a spell are View Halloo and Royal Hunting, for they usually come to hand very quickly. 01 the others Consent, Refresher, and La Moderne look the likeliest. La Moderne's effort will be invested with special interest, as it was this race.last year that tended to B how that La Poupec, a brilliant two-jeai-oltl of the prevails season, was ,not going to strike the same form js a. threej ear-old—the season closed without her scoring a single win. For those believing m the old saw about horses for courses theie are a counle of winners on last year's first day engaged. Gay Court won the Maiden twelve months ago, and dapai scored m the Flymg. .Place-getters on last yeai's first day again in the fields aie Okopua View Halloo, Ben Hur, and Consent lomp was a winner on the second day' In the autumn View Halloo (twice) and f ?4. Jury were winners, and in the w n-' rLW ?-° übt ' 9 rb^« Choice, Fernden, fessel tmS> mid Chopin refi«toed sue'-
