WIN FOR' HAWKES BAY

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

NAPIER, 17th September. The Hawkes Bay Rugby representatives defeated the visiting Wanganui team by 10 points to 8 at Napier this afternoon. The standard of play was not high, due to some extent to the weaterlogged ground. The weather was fine but dull. ■:

After, ten. minutes' play Varton, the Hawkes Bay full-back, kicked a splendid field goal from well out, despite a heavy ball. Wanganui replied immediately with a penalty goal by Morgan. Up and down play continued for a long time, -the Hawkes Bay backs failing tq take advantage of the many opportunities that came their way. Hawkes Bay were. attacking vigorously on Wanganui's line when .they were awarded a freerkick, which Satherly turned to good account. Hawkes Bay came again with the. best movement of the game so far, Smith making two determined.but unsuccessful bids for-the goal-line in quick succession. The interval was called urf mediately after; with the score: Hawkes Bay 7, Wanganui 3. . - : A long period of play of a very-low standard for representative football marked the opening of the second spell, Wanganui having a slight advantage. Wild passing on the part of the. backs failed to bring about any alteration in the score. Hawkes Bay brightened up with a spirited forward attack which brought, them to the Wanganui twenty-five, where Satherly missed an easy penalty goal. Waldiri' finally relieved the position for Wanganui with.a good dash. Hawkes Bay had a wonderful scoring chance when seven or eight of their, number were in possession almost unopposed on the goal-line, but they failed to finish off the movement.'Led by Maitland, Wanganui suddenly pushed, to the other, end, where Setfprd forced! Hawkes Bay were soon back agairif and Smith with an individual effort scored.the first try of the game, .which was not.converted. Soon after Wanganui went to the attack, Maitland flashing across for- .a good try, winch was converted by Morgan. Time was called a :few minutes later.
