LOCAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

ROBINSON WINS SENIOR RACE

AVell-deserved success was achieved by P. N. Robinson, of the Port Nicholson Club, on Saturday afternoon, when he won the Wellington provincial 50 miles road cycling championship under conditions which were trying on parts of the route. C. Ericsson (Poueke Club) made second fastest time, and F. Franklyn third fastest. .-■.; ■':

The championship- was decided in the form of a time triaj,. the riders starting off at intervals and each having to ride his own race. Robinson was first to start and he was not overtaken. His time was overdone minute, faster than that recorded by Ericsson. ,

«:c i*f» c were twenty-four starters, the !'• .-field-, comprising riders from the Mana!*r? "x, and t}je Wairarapa as well as from i the three .local clubs. Only five riders failed to; finish, and among these was K. Ulmer (Poneke Club), who was expected to provide "Robinson with a solid tussle. Ulmer, however,- on, the homeward journey had machine trouble near Upper Hutt and was forced' to' retire. P. Hussey (Foxton), Ivan Ericsson, G. Puniti, and A. Barker also did not finish. Among others who lost time as a result of machine trouble was E. R. Poulton, one of whose pedals came off. The course was from the Petone' Esplanade to half-way up the Rimutaka Hill and back. ' - The management of the race was good, plenty of . officials being available to ■ act at different points on the route. Among those present at the start of the race were. Mr. R. W. McVilly, president of ; the New Zealand Amateur Athletic and 'Cycling:' Association;' Mr. A. C. Kitto, president of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre; Mr. J. • Stalker, Mr: J. McConchie, Mr. G-. Harrison, and others from the cycling centre, and a number of representatives from clubs., ■ ■ Mr.. McVilly started. the ' championship and also a junior championship^ which was held'while the senior event was in "progress. At the end of the afternoon Mr. McVilly presented the Couchman Challenges Chip - to;- Robinson; -and the other! trophies were .presented ; by ;Miv Stalker,) chairman of the Cycling Centre. j

. '- Sealed handicaps were held in conjunction with' both: championships.- .Franklyn won 'the senior '■ In the junior event 0. Disley -won the championship by a comfortable margin and E. Thomas the handicap. The race was over a sixieen miles course. . •?.
