Interviewed on his arrival at South* ampton, the Dominions Secretary, Mr. J. H. Thomas, stated that while at Ottawa he had had conversations witli the Irish Free- State delegates regarding the position in Ireland.
"Under the guise of card parties I have been talking- -with, the Irish every; day," said Mr. Thomas. "I had hoped that my proposals would have resulted in a settlement there, but.l am. quita sure they have cleared the ground and that the discussions have done good* I certainly did not shut the door to any; avenue of peace.''
