CALEDONIAN SOCIETY
:-The Wellington Caledonian Society had a very interesting night on the occasion of their mgleside last week. The main feature of the evening was the installation of the new chief of the society, Mr. G. Lauchlan. The retiring chief, Mr. R. H. Nimmd, m installing the new chief, said that Mr. Lauehlan possessed all the necessary qualifications for the office, and paid a high tribute to his worth as a citizen and as a member-of the Scots community. Mr. Lauchlan, in responding, thanked the members for electing him to the highest position in the society. He had for many years interested.himself in Scottish matters, and had taken an active part in bringing about the amalgamation of the two iscots societies that existed in Wellington some five years ago. Though the amalgamation did not achieve all that was hoped, it had done some good. He asked the members of the society to co-operate and make the society the premier Caledonian Society in the land of their adoption. Hearty cheers were then given for the new chief and dancing-was resumed. Durr ing the evening Miss J. Stirling sang "The Lea Rig," and "The Road to the Isles." Stiss Mona Harris's songs were "Christina's Lament" and "The Joyous Bird." iliss Mavis Thiskell danced the Highland Fling, and Miss Gracie McKay the Sheauntruibhas, Mr. G.
