SECRETARY TO RETIRE
Mr. W. A. Hawkins, who lias held the position of secretary of the Xew Zealand Law Society and the Wellington District Law Society since 1925, will retire from that position early next year.
Mr. Hawkins joined the Justice Department in the combined Supreme, District, and Magistrate's Court oflices in Invercargill in 1882, being removed a few years later to Christchurch, where he remained until 1890. His next duties brought him in contact with the big gold rush in the Marlborough district in the next few years, and until 1894 he was Receiver of Gold Revenue, and Mining Registrar at Havelock and Cullensville and elsewhere in the' area. He was at Blenheim for a year and then came to Wellington to take up the position of Deputy Registrar and Sheriff, as well as the position of Clerk of Awards. In 1906 Mr. Hawkins was appointed Registrar of the Supreme Court and Registrar at Auckland during the absence of the Registrar, then on leave, and in 1908 he was appointed Registrar and Sheriff of the Supreme Court at Dunedin, which position carried with it the duties of Marshal to the Supreme Court in its Admiralty jurisdiction. Two years later Mr. Hawkins was transferred from Dunedin to Christchurch, where he held similar positions. In 1914 he was promoted to the position of Registrar and Sheriff in Wellington, where in addition he was also Registrar to , the Court of Appeal. He retired from this position in June, 1925. Shortly afterwards he was appointed secretary to the New Zealand Law Society.
