MERRY PEEL'S SUCCESS

! Few hprses in the Cup can claim better breeding than he can. He is a five-year-old brown gelding by Hunting Song from that good brood mare, Merry Roe, the dam ■also of Sunny Roe, Merry Damon, Merry Alint, and Merry Hunter (a younger fullbrotner to him). Sunny Roe was not a conspicuous turf success, but at the stud she has left such a good performer as Sunny Sky, winner of the recent Cornwall and King George Handicaps at tho Auckland Meeting. Sunny Sky, like MerryPeel,- is by Hunting Song. Sunny Bachelor, a full-brofter to Sunny Sky, was successful at Gisborne on Saturday. Few members of this family have failed to show galloping ability above the ordinary. Previously Merry Peel had not won beyond seven furlongs, but, as might be expected from his breeding, he 6howed on Saturday that a mile is well within his compass. Recently he was twice successful on the same day at the Wellington Winter Meeting, under very favourable weights to be sure, but. he demonstrated on Saturday that weight does not trouble him, as he had 9st 6lb to carry. He lias made very decided improvment lately and many will be with him with his Sst'2lb in the Winter Cup. Still, on the same mark, there is Beacon Fire, who is probably a rather more likely hack than he is, even, allowing for recent improvement,1
