LEADING TEAMS DEFEATED
PETONE MOVE UP WITH BIG SCORE
VA further interesting development in the bidding for Senior' ARugby football honours took place on Saturday afternoon, when in the series of championship matches'the two leading. teams, Pbneke and Eastbourne, were defeated. Ilutt put up a good performance in defeating Poneke, though only by the narrow margin of one point, in a keenly-contested game at Athletic Park, and their win was well deserved. This result would have allowed Eastbourne to join Poneke on the top rung of the ladder but for the fact that Eastbourne encountered very strong opposition from Wellington, who struck really good form and won decisively. That left Poneke with a two-point lead from Eastbourne. However, Petone were right on their game, and in their contest with Oriental they did some sensational scoring in the second spell, during, which tliey added fortyfour points to the six scored by them in the first spell. By this win, Petone came into greater reckoning for championship honours, as they are now only a point behind Poneke. University had a win over Berhampore, as did Marist over Miramar, and Wellington College Old Boys were too good for Athletic in a match in which injuries affected performance.
