JUVENILE CONCERT LEAGUE
In the excellent work of infusing musical appreciation into the young the Juvenile Concert League continues on its way. The second concert of this season was given in the Town Hall last evening to a large number of children and their elders, but for such a musical feast the hall should have been packed. There is nothing "highbrow" in the music; anyone with an elementary sense of beauty can understand it—the point is that it is good. Mr. John Bishop. deserves hearty praise for his efforts in the cause.
Mr. Bishop explained last evening that the organ music, which was to have been played, would now be on the programme of the next concert. Mr. Bernard F. Page had promised to play then, and "take the organ to pieces." The next concert would be the final for the season,, and it was hoped to make it the finest yet given; there woujd be the orchestra besides the organ. To ensure the hall being filled, each child- present was asked to bring three others -with him. It was hoped to form a choir from the league. The combined schools' choir is to give a concert on 29th October, and it.is proposed to combine the two choirs.
The programme was as follows:—Pianoforte :solos by iMr.r Bishop; "Andalusa" (Granados),-"Refrain de Berceau" (Pahhgren), and "Puck" (Grieg); Mr. S. E. Rodger sang "A'Little.House of Dreams;" and "Easter Flowers"; Mr. George Ellwqod, two 'celloi'solos, "Guitarre" ;(Moszkowski), and "Liebestraum" (Liszt). Members of the Wellington-Harmonic Society sang the following numbers under the baton of Mr. H. Temple White: "Matona, Lovely Maiden!' (O. Lassus),. "Eriskay, Love Lilt" (Roberton),"Choral Rhapsody on Welsh Airs" (Percy.. Fletcher), and "Down in the Land of Greeno," an old English folk song that, was sojiopular that it had to be-repeated. Miss Gladys Watl;ins explained the internal lay-out of the National War Memorial Carillon, and the various methods of playing the Uells.
