NEW ZEALAND'S CHANCE

'The Xew Zealand Co-op. Pig Marketing Association has been reconstructed and its. work carried on without the slightest, disturbance, stated the chairman-, Mr. A. Philfips. The objet of the reconstruction was to amend its lonstitution in lespect of its * basis of sWe holding and system of operation to conform with that of co-operative dairy companies. The bal-ance-sheet for the eleven months ended 31st May disclosed a surplus of £7200, and this sum would be paid out to suppliers of the association ,at the end of August. The company during the five months from January to 31st May last had handled nearly 22,000 pigs, a record for the period. Practically the -whole of these hud been exported 'to the United Kingdom, "thereby relieving the local market. Over two-thirds of -its-pig- turnover had 'been'in porkers, in which direction lay ■the greatest opportunity for profitably mci easing the export tiade. Ireland's adversity may prove New Zealand's opportunity, according to Mr. Phillips, -who anticipated, "that the association's turnover w ill be doubled .this year, in ,-whicti event the. recent tariff reprisals between Kngland and Ireland, if continued, will give - the company arf excellent opportunity to " establish a firm market for its products. 'Ireland exported to England last year over 500,000 carcasses of fresh pork, and in addition over a million carcasses in the form of bacon'and hams. The 20 per cent, tariff imposed on these imports represents a preference to us more than sufficient- to defray our transportation costs to the United Kingdom."
