At the fortnightly meeting of the, council held on Thursday last, Mr. J. Tucker, vice-president, presided "- over a- good attendance of delegates.
At the invitation of the Boy Unemployment Council, Mr: F. Cornwell. was. appointed attend the next meeting. , A request was received from the- Auckland Biscuit and Confectionery Workers' Union,' that the Trades: and Labour Council forma union of the workers in that industry in Wellington. As this matter had been, previously- mentioned, the council decided that steps should: be at once taken •to organise these workers. One of-the most important matters winch-have,come before the council for some little time, was a request to the building trades union's that they agree to work/shifts orfia building to:be erected at A'apier, at the ordinary rates of wages. Whilst most unions are opposed to' overtime! being worked where circumstances do not justify it, they certainly me-op-posed to men working throughout the night at ordinary rates of wage's, and the council decided to strongly advise the building trades unions to oppose - any attempt to break do\vn-one of the conditions of. the industry recognised throughout the world, namely payment for overtime when it is worked. The job in question is just aboijt one of the last which should be erected under such conditions, it > was stated. . ■'
Messrs. J.'.GninsbjvF. Pulse, AY. Shannon,, and 8.-Tayior, delegates appointed by the Painters and Decorators' Union, were welcomed by the chairman.
