GENEROSITY OF SUPPORT

DUNEDIN, 28th July.
A meeting of the Otago and Southland division of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign was hold in the Town Hall to-day, presided over by Sir Louis Barnctt, the chairman. . ■ .. . Since the campaign was first instituted in Otago and Southland in November,, 1929, the gratifying sum of £24,400 has been subscribed to this cause through the generosity of citizens of. Qtago and Southland. No further appeal for funds is contemplated in the meantime, as the money now in hand is quite satisfactory for present needs. ■ s A full statement of $he financial posi^ tiou of the local, division was submitted to and approved by the meeting. ' A report was presented by Dr. BAth explaining the work of the local conj sultation clinic and the growing sue? cess of the clinic, which is becoming increasingly useful in earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment. Special stress was laid on the importance of prompt notification, as shown by the records, of attacking the disease in its early stages. The records already studied indicated -that the great majority of cancers in accessible, positions, such as on the surface of the body, are curable by present surgical - anil radiation methods, while improved-results, in the more difficult class of internal cancers are anticipated from, the laboratory; researches that aro in progress at the Dunedin Medical School under the direction of Dr y Begg. ' , A report dealing- with his. work was submitted by 'Dr, ; Begg, • who is con.: ducting in Dunedin researches which he classified nnder three headings: (1)'-. Be* search into the nature of cancer; (2j research for. diagnostic basisot cancer; and (3) research into treatment.
