FOR HOBART SERVICE
OVERHAUL IN SYDNEY
The Huddart, Parker steamor Ulimaroa, which has been undergoing an j extensive overhaul at Sydney, is to lio placed in the Sydney-Hobart Bervice. With tho withdrawal of the Ulimaroa. from the New Zealand aervice, goes a vessel that has carried thousand* of passengers across, the Taiman without $ serious mishap. The Ulima»(M,,wl»iph was designed specially for the passenger service between Australia and New Zealand, was built by Gourlay Bros, and Company, Ltd., at. Dundee, and was launched in January, 1008. In that year she took up her gunning in the service from Sydney, to Wellington', Lyttelton, Dunedin, Bluff, Hobart, Melbourne, and back.to Sydney. She: was the first ship; tradittg. to; New Zealand to be fitted with a -Wireless telegraph. During the war the. Ulimaroa served as a troop ship. The Ulimaroa was laid up on her arrival at Sydney im sth April, and her placf in the\New Zea-land-Sydney service was taken' by;the Zealandia. .. '.'". \ . The Ulimaroa will leave Sydney on Saturday,,29th October, for Hobfcrt,.afid will arrive at Hobart.on Monday morning. She will leave Hobart on sth November on the return trip; to Sydney. Tho Ulimaroa wili carry out a fortnightly .service until 7th December, when she will, commence a weekly, service, leaving Sydney every Wednesday, and Hobart every Saturday. . j: :■'. '■': A report from Hobart to thG";Daily Commercial News and Shipping Gazette,*' Sydney,: some time ago was to j the effect that a statement was imado recently by Mr. Murdoch, M.L.C., that he had every'reason to believe that there would be.a permanent and regular shipping servico between Sydney and Hobart next year. At present, he said, he was unable ,to give any further information regarding the proposed' service 4 For several.years the seryice: between Sydney and HoUart had been carried on" in Summer months only .by the Huddart, Parker steamer Zealandia. Public bodies throughout Tasmania were co-operating with the Hobart Chamber of Commerce in its efforts to induce tho Federal Ministry to repeal the coastal clauses of the Navigation: Act to enable overseas vessels to carry passengers between Tasmania and the mainland. It was hoped that the special legislation which the Prime Minister (Mr. Lyons) had indicated would be submitted to the Federal Parliament would be introduced as soon as possible in order that arrangements may be made in timo for the forthcoming tourist season.
