DEPARTMENT'S CASE
Beplying to- a request;that :the Audit Department, should reduce its, scale of charges, the ;Auditor-General iifprmed | the Auckland' Education Board on Wednesday that the scale was fixed by the Government and was outside the scope of.the Department, states the "New i Zealand Herald." . .': ■:

Audit Officej" stated the.: Auditor-General'si ; letter. "However, the office is, of opinion^ that the present scale of .£'33s a day, inclusive, of travelling expenses, is a reasonable one, and'you i. may not. lie aware that the' rate! fixed; by the New Zealand Society of "Accountants for the audits carried; out by its; members is AX. 7s a day, exclusive of travelling and other expenses.;" ', .';, . ■"."'':

The chairman, Mr. A. BuriiSy said it appeared that the 10 per cent, .cut obtained everywhere.. except . for : audit .charges. .... ... \-
The secretary, Mr. D- -W» Diinlop, said the-board's balance-sheet had been retnrned with a "tag" requiring tho production of receipts for moneys paid to school committees. Bank lodgment slips were not considered sufficient quittance.
"I would like to seethe; balancesheet, clear, ;as it, is -correct' in every other way," said Mr. Burns. ../;
