COMMITTEES TO BE SET UP
PLANS FOR PROCEDURE
United Press- Association—By Electric Tele-Braph-r-Copyright. (Received 22nd July, 2 p.m.) OTTAWA, 21st July. The Empire Conference resumed privately this afternoon and decided to appoint five committees, to examine:— 1. Trade within the Empire. 2. Customs administration. ' 3. Foreign treaties, involving Britain's favoured/ nation , arrange incuts. 4. Monetary and financial questions. 5. Methods of economic and industrial co-operation. The last committee's discussions are expected to result in'the establishment of an Empiio Economic General Staff, as recommended in 1930' by the Federation of British Industries and the Trades Union Council, probably absorbing the Imperial Economic Committee and the Empiro Marketing. Board. Mr. Bruce,- while at the 1926 Conference, actively sponsored the idea of industrial co-opeiation, and so impressed Mr. Baldwin that ho made it a feature of his policy spceshes. The latest Anglo-Canadian iron, steel, and leather agreements lead to the'hope that panada will give substantial backing to the idea that may be developed during the Conference. , > The full delegations meet to-morrow to appoint the personnel of tho Com-1 mittecs. They will then adjourn to I enable tho leaders of the delegations to confer on 'questions 'of high policy. The first Committee assembles to-1 morrow afternoon to frame a schedule of commodities in.which the. individual Dominions are interested, and then adjourns to enable each country to formulate a report, disclosing its precise plans:
The Canadian .Government entertained the delegates and a thousand prominent people at a banquet at the Chateau. Two hundred newspaper-men were entertained at a dinner at the Boyal Ottawa Golf Club, Mr. Manion, Minister of Railways,' presided. Mr. Gwynne, editor of the "Morning Post," responded. Messrs. Bruee, Coates, andjHavenga have arranged for an opportunity to deliver "business" speeches at to-morrow's plenary session, giving details of.their picferenco plans. ' ' - l
