BOILERMAKERS' STRIKE
FOUNDRIES AT AUCKLAND

A strike of boilermakers occurred, in Auckland to-day as, the .result of the new terms and conditions adopted by the ironmasters to replaco the award .which expired last week, Tho strike is stated to involve no serious dislocation of the industiy at present owing to the limited amount of employment available to boilcrrnakers, who; in addition to 'perfoiniing work in connection with i ships, are customarily employed in steel construction and riveting on "buildings. '
The general engineering trades provided the first instance of the cancellation of a Dominion award j under the recent legislation. The new terms and conditions offered by the employers were rejected at Conciliation Council proceedings by tho representatives of tho workers. , As the'award hud ceased to operate,- the employers drew up terms and' conditions to operato from last Monday. Although in some foundries notices were not posted until to-day,: tho general effect of tho new arrangement is to bring about a further 10 per cent, reduction in wages and to alter the overtime ratea and general conditions of work. ,
Itwwarsr stated by one ironmaster that a minimum me of about Is 6d had been provided for in'the new terms. The engineers, who constitute the larger section of tho industr-'-, are. riot in-volved-in the strike.
There have, been no conferences between, the parlies since the strike occurred. No disorganisation' of industry is anticipated,'as'little ship repair or building construction -operations are at present in hand. ■. • - ,
