It was officially announced to a "Post 3"' representative to-day that Mr. Justice .Adams,' one of the Judges of the Supreme Court Bench, has been granted twelve months' leave "of absence as from 3rd August next. There is an;unwritten'law that after ten years' service- a Judge is entitled to a yearns leave. ■ Mr. Justice Adams was' appointed to the Supremo Court Bench on 22nd March, 1921, so that really his'j leave fell duo over twelve months ago. For private reasons his Honour postponed taking his leave until this year. At the end of the twelvo months he will have reached the retiring aso of 72.

Mr.' Justice Adonis, whoso home is in Christchurch, was born at Taieri Mouth' (Otago) in 1861. He was ad-, mitted as a barrister and solicitor in 1883, and practisod' with his brother until 1910. In 1903-4: he was president of tho Council of Churches, and he has also been closely associated with the Prohibition movement in New Zealand and, the New .Zealand Alliance, /of which he is an ex-president. His Honour was appointed Crown Solicitor at Dunedin in 19,20, and the following year he was elevated to the Supreme Cburt'Bench. .In 1908.h0 contested tho Bnnedin 'West seat at "the General Election.

A very high tribute' to Mr. Justice Adams is p^id in t;bo book, "Tem.porancc. and Prohibition in New Zealand," the work of the-Kov. J. Cocker and Mr. -J. Malton Muriay. After stating that his Honour occupies a place of singular honour and respect among the stalwarts of tho Prohibition movement, the reference continues: "For morb than thirty years—up to the timo*. of his, elevation to the Judges', Bench—he was known throughout the Dominion, as an able Prohibition advocate. His addresses wero of a spiritual nature, and his religious intensity gripped his hearers. Ho has the distinction of having been seven times elected president of the Now Zealand Alliance. .. He has been ;a valuable assot to the Prohibition movement:" It is also of interest to note that, owing to tho efnuxion of time, there will bo ( two,other Judges.retiring within the, next fow years, which, with the retirement of Mr. Justice Adams next year, will mean three new appointments to the .Judiciary.
