TUG-OF-WAR CHAMPIONSHIPS
I,' It. is ieported by tho hon. becretaiy of ] the sports section of the Wellington City Mission that between thirty and forty entries are to hand'for the Korth'lsland light and heavyweight tug-of-war championships, to be contested at tho "Silver Lining' Fair" iv the Town Hall in Septemiber: Inquiries "and "entries have been received from ,the Defence Department, 'Police, Fire-Brigade,'Swedish Club, Greek Club, Stop Out Club, Jenkins School of PhysiCal Culture, Milk Department. Oil companies,, cquncil\j"ards, Gas Co., Moera settlers, Levin ] settlers, Makara settlers, me'n'B-i shelter, -Cooper . Bros., Pahiatua, Royal Tiger, Longburn Freezing Co., and Massey,Agricultural College, and additional entries are expected before the closing date (22nd August). * Besides the. tug-of-war a host of good items are being arranged, and the commer,cial travellers have stated their wiH'ingness to arrange the programmes'for the 'opening and '.closing nights of the fair, and.iother clubs have intimated their willingness to 'arrange piogramines for the other nights.; The ladies are all working very hard for their stalls, and everybody is assured of ■•'getting anything they may 1 require besidesv being able to enjoy an excellent evening'K<,entertainment. * The manager of the Men's Shelter is desirous of thanwng the following for donations to the shelter:—Reliable Small Goods Co. (stock jelly), Whyte's Bakery, Carterton-.'(bread and buns), Hawera Church Committee (vegetables and clothing), Mrs. C. Smith (potatoes), J. TowerBey (cakes), Mr. Heron, Newport Chambers I (soup and milk)", Victoria College (coffeek Anonymous, Manakau (vegetables), Makara settlers (vegetables), and Plunket Society (cakes from ball).
