OLYMPIC GAMES
MORE TEAMS ANNOUNCED
Many nations have succeeded in arranging for good representation at the Olympic Games commencing at Los Angeles on Saturday week. Where some countries have been forced through the effects of the world depression and other matters to send smaller teams than iv£S intended originally, othei\shavc been able to send teams of greater numerical strength than in the case of the Games four years ago. Japan's representation is particularly big, and in addition to the competitors a strong delegation has been sent with. a -view to pressing claims for the 1940 Games to be held in Japan. Early this month the British Olympic Committee announced that the following athletes had been selected to represent Great Britain at Los Angeles:— Sprints: S. C. Fuller, Page, Reid, and S. E. Engelhart. 400 metres: Hampson, G. L. Eampling, J. V. Powell, Stoneley. SOO metres: Hampson and Powell. 1500 inetrca: Comes and K. H. Thomas. 5000 metres: G. W. Bailey, Bruns, and Evenson. Steepleehaf*?: Bailey and Evensou-.i Hurdles: Lord Burghley, Finlay, and ft. Harper. 50,000 metres walk: T. W. Green. Marathon: S. Ferris and D. M. Wright. Great Britain has not entered in any of the field events. Lord Burghley will captain the team. The Cambridge crew is to represent Great Britain in the eight-oared rowing event at the Games, the Thames Club will tako part in the four-oared events, and the Oxonians, Edwards and Clive, will compete in the pairs. South Africa's representation -will be as follows:—Manager, Mr. P. J. Grobbelar.i. (an officer of the polieo training depot at Pretoria), who will be a competitor in tho modern pentathlon. Athletes: W. J. Walters (200 and 400 metres), D. J. Joubert (100 and 200 metres), H. Hart (shot, discus, javelin, decathlon), Miss Clark (women's 100 j metres, 110 metres, hurd a, high jump). Swimmer: MissMakaal (100 and 400 j metres breaststroke, 200 metres breast-1 stroke). .Boxers: I. Duke (flyweight and bantam), L. Stevens (feather ■ and J light), E. Barton' (welter), E. Pierce (middle), D. Cars^ens (light-heavy). Mr. F. W. Bostron is adviser to the team, which travelled via England to Los Angeles.
