* Miss Doris Black, lyric soprano, is making her first appearance, since her return from London, in a recital in Nimmo's Hall on Saturday next, at 8 p.m., when she will present.' a most attractive and ;ivell-bala'nced programme of vocal selections.- The. items will be as varied in the nationality of their composers as they will.be in the range of their appeal, for the singer is drawing from Italian, Russian, German, Old English, and Modern English sources, and the programme will ineludo such. diverse- numbers as "Saper Vorreste," from the. popular opera "Un BalloinMaschera," and "Dido's Lament," a remarkably appealing air from Purcell's opera "Dido.and Aeneas." A number; of iteins,,will be new to Wellington audiences, such., as. "Farewell to My Home," from Catalani's little-known opera "La Wally," , and. "The Knight pf Bethlehem," by David Thomson. Other numbers will be "Don't Come in Sir, Please" (Cyril Scott), "The Song, of the Palanquin Bearers," (Martin Shaw), and "A Prayer to Our Lady," (Donald Ford).
