MR. BRUCE AT WINNIPEG

POSITION OF CANADA

MAXIMUM PROBLEM

(Received 19th' July, 9 a.m.)

WINNIPEG, 18th July. Canadian newspapers interviewed Mr. Bruce at Winnipeg, when he said: ''This, is the first Imperial Economic Conference for which adequate preparations have been made. Australia has been working on Empire trade problems for the past four months, and is going to Ottawa well equipped to discuss every, phase. There is really only one problem, namely,- world commodity prices. Although the British nations may be unable wholly to solve it, ijOttawa, could makg-.a. substantial- con-.

tribution. Canada has the maximum problem, because of her great industrial development. Australia's problem is much smaller; because, although she possesses considerable secondary industries, practically all her exports are primary products. Canada ?s position is more difficult than that of the other Dominions, because she is both a primary and secondary exporting country." ■

Mr. Bruce said that he saw great opportunities for Canada in the industrial co-operation with Britain. Both countries, with the assistance of their industrial leaders, could say: "This market is for you and that for us." "There is,", he added, "a great opportunity for Canada to give a lead in this connection."
