THE BUILDING SUBSIDY

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—l'leasq 4 grant me the space to give what I consider.' both a warning and sound advice to the property owners who' are about to embark upon alterations and renovations under tb,e new Government subsidised scheme for helping the workers ■of the building trade. One of the greatest essentials if any benefit is to be got by the owner in return for opening his purse is efficient labour and experience. This can only be done if the work is put through, the established master tradesmen. Most _of the master plumbers, painters, electricians, etc., who are already: established, are working with .. the object' of maintaining the goodwill of : the .owner/and will see that he receives good value and full benefit of the subsidy to- s gether with experienced supervision. After all, just what is, the value o£ having the Government pay one-third of the labour cost of repairing a.roof if it still leaks afterwards, and then wtiere must the Owner go for redress.- If the work is put through the usual channels he can immediately get his troubles rectified without further expenditure.—l am, etc., :

L. BOIELLE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Are,we to understand that wo unfortunates struggling to. kefep. our homes have to pay the Is tax to assist those in more fortunate circumstances to modernise their homes and build sun-porches, etc., and so enrich themselves at .the'expense of others? Why not subsidise Pubjie Works, such as the National -Museum and Art Gallery, Plimmerton -bridge,* or any other work which would benefit the community and not the individual.—l am, etc,. I ... C.T.

[Buildings for public purposes will, it is understood, be entitled to the subsidy, but if the payment were limited to Biich works it would not hWe the full effect desired in encouraging the building trade. -Ed.] '
