NORFOLK ISLAND

WEEKLY NEWSPAPER

TYPED ON FOOLSCAP

Even in such an out-of-the-way place as Norfolk Island the people must have their news, and judging from, recent issues of the "Norfolk Island Weekly News," they are well catered for. The publication is typewritten and cyclostyled on folded foolscap, and sells for 3d, very good value since it contains cable news from all parts of tho world, local gossip and sports results, shipping news, and some entertaining accounts of. meetings of the Executive Council of the' island, written with candour and freedom. The advertisements, too, are set out in a novel way, and, haying regard .to the limited equipment, are distinctly creditable. The names of several families widely known by their former association with Piteairn Island, where the Bounty mutineers settled in 1790, are noticeable in the reports of social gatherings and meetings. The anniversary of the arrival of 194 Pitcairn Islanders at Norfolk Island in .1856 fell .on Bth June, and the occasion, -was marked by a front-page story in the "News" giving a brief account of the mutiny and tho subsequent events. "Of those 194 Pitcairners only four- now remain with us," says the paper, in suggesting that the memory of the original party be kept green by the planting of a treefor each one at. some appropriate spot. *-'If the 'Trees of -Memory' were planted on Bth June, 1933, they would make an excellent show by the time the centenary celebrations'- take place in 1956. Could these people who are held so dearly, not only by their descendants but also by many others who have come in contact with them, wish for any more ■ fitting memorial than such a one which would beautify the home of their adoption?" Each issue of the "News" contains twelve pages closely typed, and no doubt the; paper has many enthusiastic readers to reward the enterprise of its publisher.
