'HIGHER 'SALARIES ONLY

FIVE AND TEN PER CENT.

Tl»e ,City Council last evening decided to institute further cuts in the salaries of higher-salaried officers, of 5 and 10 per cent. >

The proposals made1 by the Estimates Committee wero as follows:—

■ In order to keep in employment _as many men as possible the following reductions in salaries should apply throughout the Corporation services wjth tho exception Of officers under awards:—On all existing salaries over £300 and up to £400 per annum, a.reduation. of 5 per cent.; on all existing salaries over £400 per annum, a reduction of 10 per cent., provided that in no case is an, officer's salary to be reduced below that of another officer ■who was previously receiving less than the first-named officer. All cases of appeal on account of hardship to bo dealt with by the Staff Committee. The estimates for each committee should stand as already agreed to, tho savings affected under clause 1 to be allocated at'a later date., ' TO SAVE DISMISSALS. Nobody wished to reduce salaries, said Mr. Hisjop, but unless that .were done there would be no alternative but for the council to dismiss-more men. The Estimates Committee were agreed, except that Councillor McKeen had recorded his dissent; Councillor Forsyth said it had been understood that salaries would not be reduced below £300. GRADE INCREASES. Councillor Chapman asked if- grade increases were to be granted" or withheld. One' year's grading- increase should Bo given in the caso of junior officers at least. , The Mayor said he thought that could not be done without nullifying the saving of £2000;

On Councillor Chapman's motion, it' wag decided to refer the matter to the Special- Committee for report. .' Councillor Appleton said that no business in its sober senses could consider increments.

Thereport was adopted, on the castr ing; vote-of the Mayor, the voting being:-—For: The Mayor, " Councillors Appleton, Bennett, Porsyth, Gaudin, Hugging, and Wallace. Against: Councillors Chapman, Duncan, Holm, McDoaald, McEldowney, McKeen, and Semple. * Councillor Semple said he wished to bring his motion (proposing the reduction of salaries of £1000 and over io! £750 and of other higher salaries to £500) before the council at< the next meeting.
