Playing for Yorkshire against Essex, Holmes and Suteliffe established a world record first-wicket partnership of 555 runs, when Suteliffe was bowled for 333, beating the Brown-Tunnecliffe score of 554 in 1898. Allom is unable to play in the Test trial match, and Tato replaces him.
