SOME HEAVY RAIN

A very intense cyclone moved on to New Zealand yesterday, the centre of it crossing south of Cook Strait last night. By this morning it.was centred off..the east coast of Otago, and all barometers in and south of' Cook . Strait' showed readings below 29 inches. This morning's lowest reading was recorded at Dunedin, one of 28.80 inches. General rain has been experienced, with many heavy falls north of Nelson and Marlborough and in Westland. Motueka reports 23S points,. Nelson 122, East Cape 127, and many other places over an inch of rain. Snow has. fallen on somo of the South Island ranges. Winds have boen moderate to strong generally, gale force being reached in places, especially in the North Island. The wind direction has been chiefly northoast or north1, but since last night westerlies, and in.some places in the South Island south-wosterljes, have, set in,although, tho latter have been only light to moderate generally speaking! The- weather in Auckland yesterday and las^t night was unsettled and showr cry. ». strong northerly wind prevailed there and reached gale force at night. In Wellington the weather during the greator part of the day was dull but fair. Heavy rain, however, fell between 4.30 p.m. and 6 p.m., and again during the early hours this morning. The fall recorded at Kelburn totalled 58 points, Lower Hutt having 40 points. A strong north-easterly wind prevailed in Christchurch yesterday, the weather being dull with a drizzling rain at times.' In the evening the rain was heavier, the total fall up to 9 a.m. to-day measuring-20 points. Dunedin also had.a strong north-easter-ly wind all day. The'early morning was showery, but tlie remainder of the day was fair! to dull.

Moderate to strong winds may be expected from between the south-west and north-west, westerlies prevailing and in places Teaching.gale force. The weather is still likely to lie unsettled with rain at times in most districts and with show on the higher levels in the South Island. Conditions will bo more changeable than they; have been lately.
