ZOOLOGICAL PARK
AUCKLAND PRINCIPLE
(By Telegraph.)
(Special to "The Evening. Post.")
AUCKLAND, 16th June,
The proposal that the Wellington ZO6 should be closed on the grounds of ebon* omy has created. some interest ia Auckland. The principle that a zoological park should be expected to pay its way has never been accepted by the Auckland City Council, nor by those ,who were instrumental in having the park at Grey Lynn established. Similar views are held by most other controlling authorities where zoos form part of the civic amenities; ( The idea generally held is that a zoo is not so much a show place as a park similar to other cultivated open spaces in cities, and that it is : a worth-while adjunct to the community life in help* ing in education in natural history. . The expenditure on Auckland's Zoo last year was £7854, including £432 spent on new exhibits. Receipts from all sources totalled £3483, leaving £4371 to be found from the_ rates. Ijor the current year the expenditure is expected to be £7958 and the revennt £3000, leaving £4958 to be found from the rates, an amount equal to a littl* under a halfpenny in the pound on th* rateable value of the city.
